That’s right. The band whose video launched MTV will perform live for the first time ever next month in London.
MTV came into this world on August 1, 1981, kicking off with The Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star” and since then the band has been synonymous with the paradigm shift in pop culture as well as the recording industry that was brought about by the music video channel.
But the band, which never played a complete live concert, broke up in ’81 as Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes joined Yes for a single album and tour.
Now the original Buggles lineup returns with Bruce Woolley joining Downes and Horn for a gig benefiting London’s Royal Hospital For Neuro-Disability Sept. 28 at an undisclosed West London venue described as “special and intimate” on TrevorHorn.com. The evening will feature a complete start-to-finish run-through of The Buggles’ debut album, The Age Of Plastic.
Horn’s website also promises “surprise guests, support acts and pre-show exclusives.” However, the word is there will be no tour, no DVD or live CD released.
