The U.S. temporarily halted shipments of imported orange juice from all countries and said it would destroy or ban products containing even low levels of a banned fungicide.
If you’re trying to find brands that do not import from Brazil, you’re in luck. FLORIDAS NATURAL does not import from brazil. They use oranges from the United States. 100% Florida oranges to be exact.
The imports will be held while they’re tested and may be sold if levels are below trace amounts, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday. The fungicide, linked in studies to a higher risk of liver tumors in animals, was found in trace amounts last month in products from Brazil, which produces almost 1 in 6 glasses of orange juice consumed in the U.S., according to CitrusBR, an export industry association.
Though the chemical, carbendazim, is used on crops in many countries, it isn’t approved for use on oranges in the U.S. The agency’s announcement spurred calls by a consumer group for the FDA to set standards on chemicals for testing. “We’re glad they will be testing for this fungicide, but we would like there to be standards they could enforce for residue levels in food — for this chemical and others, like arsenic or lead that have been found in other juices,” said Patty Lovera, assistant director of the Washington-based Food and Water Watch, an advocacy group that works to ensure safe, accessible and sustainable food. “We think FDA needs to do more inspections of imported food, including juice,” she said.
Initial tests on Canadian shipments didn’t turn up the chemical, the FDA said. Carbendazim is used to combat black spot, a fungus that doesn’t affect taste or crop yields but makes fruits less appealing to consumers, said Brazil’s grower-run Fund for Citrus Plant Protection, known as Fundecitrus. The FDA is also screening juice that’s already for sale in the U.S. market, said Siobhan DeLancey, an agency spokeswoman. That’s because products often contain a mixture of imported and domestic juice. Preliminary tests on three Canadian samples were negative, she said.
Americans consumed 1.2 million gallons from the 2009-10 growing season, U.S. Department of Agriculture data show. The agency hasn’t previously tested for the chemical because it wasn’t a risk, DeLancey said. A company recently reported finding the chemical after several years of monitoring, she said.
Concerns about the pesticide started Dec. 28 when the FDA learned that the unnamed juice company had detected low levels in its own and other products. “Brazilian orange juice is safe and always has been,” said Dan Schafer, a spokesman for Atlanta-based Coca-Cola Co., which owns the Minute Maid brand.
Orange juice futures rose the most in five years after the FDA investigation was announced, combined with freezing weather that has damaged citrus crops in Florida.Tweet

No dates, no times, not even a guarantee the shows will even happen, but VAN HALEN has announced a 2012 tour. If you ask me, I won’t believe it until I see it. While Sammy won Michael Anthony in the big Van Hagar breakup, Eddie managed to get David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen, and his son Wolfgang together to form the 2012 version of Van Halen.
The news was broken with a simple tweet pointing you to a few video shorts on the Van Halen website. Eddie, Roth, and the official VH twitter all tweeted at around 3am est on the 26th. The video shorts all have a banner scrolling across the bottom stating “Van Halen on tour 2012. First tickets available January 10″. The video apparently features visuals of bandmembers performing a brand new song (from the yet-to-be-released track’s official video) set to the audio of several David Lee Roth-era VAN HALEN classics. As far as tickets, we’re not sure if the January 10th date is a presale (fanclub or otherwise) or if this will be a straight onsale. Let’s assume for the moment that it will be a fanclub presale that you will have to pay to join.There is also the possibility presales may happen before Jan 10.Please check back for details.
VAN HALEN’s new record deal with Interscope was finalized last month and marks the first time the band has recorded away from Warner Bros. Records, which signed the group in 1977. The new VAN HALEN album, its first with Roth since “1984″ was released on the last day of 1983, will reportedly come out in 2012, possibly in February. ALTER BRIDGE guitarist Mark Tremonti recently said in an interview that he had gotten an opportunity to hear new VAN HALEN music through his friendship with bassist Wolfgang Van Halen (guitarist Eddie Van Halen’s son), saying it sounded like “vintage VAN HALEN.”
UPDATE:
Van Halen have announced the first leg of their massive 2012 world tour. The run will kick off in Louisville, KY then eventually make two stops at Madison Square Garden and one stop at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center before wrapping up in New Orleans on June 26th. All of the veteran rock group’s newly announced shows can be found below. Their forthcoming twelfth studio album, A Different Kind of Truth, drops February 7th via Interscope Records. The LP’s first single should hit the web next week.

Eagles, Tom Petty to perform at 2012 Jazz Fest

The Eagles, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, the Foo Fighters and John Mayer are among the headliners to perform at next year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

It will be the first year the Eagles and Tom Petty play Jazz Fest, the outdoor music event that features hundreds of Louisiana artists in such genres as jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, Cajun and zydeco. The festival is accented by national acts that in 2012 will include the Zac Brown Band, Herbie Hancock, My Morning Jacket, Bonnie Raitt, Al Green, Jill Scott and Florence & the Machine.

In all, hundreds of acts will perform on roughly a dozen stages over two weekends from April 27 through May 6 at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans. Roughly 85 percent of the lineup is from Louisiana, including New Orleans soul singer Irma Thomas, singer-pianist Allen Toussaint and jazz clarinetist Pete Fountain.

“This festival really offers the best of both worlds,” said Quint Davis, the festival’s producer. “The heart and soul of the festival is all the Louisiana artists, but added to that is the very best of all these other genres.”

Davis said it was a treat to land both the Eagles and Tom Petty the same year, especially considering the Eagles aren’t on tour.

“They’ve been on our most in demand list for years,” Davis said. “They are both legendary groups that you hope someday you can get. To have both in the same year and on top of that have the Foo Fighters, it’s amazing that they’ve all come together in one year.”

Next year’s Jazz Fest will include a 50th anniversary celebration of Preservation Hall, the French Quarter venue founded in 1961 to protect and honor New Orleans jazz. It’s also home to the world-renowned Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The celebration will include a concert the second weekend of the festival, Davis said. Performers for the event will be released next year, he said.

The Mardi Gras Indians will be given an entire pavilion to showcase their photos, costumes, and music, Davis said.

Davis said the HBO television series “Treme” brought national attention to the Mardi Gras Indians, so next year the festival plans to include a lecture series, costume demonstrations and a photo display showing the history of the Mardi Gras Indian culture in New Orleans.

“‘Treme’ was probably the first national look at the Mardi Gras Indians,” Davis said. “Millions of people saw that for the first time, and it generated interest. It made more people aware.”

The lineup will include performances by the Mardi Gras Indians as well as the city’s popular brass bands.

“We have music that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world, and that’s an amazing thing to be able to say,” Davis said. “It’s a unique birthright that nobody else can claim.”

Relient K TICKETS have announced their first acoustic Christmas tour with support from Sherwood and Deas Vail.

K was formed in 1998 in Canton, Ohio by Matt Thiessen, Brian Pittman, and Matt Hoopes during the band’s junior year in high school and their time at Malone College. The band is named after guitarist Hoopes’ automobile, a Plymouth Reliant K car, with the spelling intentionally altered to avoid trademark infringement over the Reliant name.
The group is associated with the Contemporary Christian Music culture, most notably the Christian rock and Christian punk scene.
Relient K is best known commercially for their two studio albums which peaked in the top 15 of the US Billboard 200 chart. After signing with Capitol Records, they broke into the mainstream in 2004 with the release of Mmhmm, which debuted at #15 on the Billboard 200. In 2007, their fifth album brought the most success for Relient K, Five Score and Seven Years Ago debuted at #6 on the US Billboard 200 and sold 60,000 records in its debut week. The band has sold over 2 million records, with three albums being given gold certification by the RIAA
