Willie Nelson pounds pavement behind ‘American Classic’

Willie Nelson [ tickets ] has filled out his 2010 tour plans, adding more shows to his in-progress US trek behind last August’s “American Classic.”
The Red-Headed Stranger will take to the stage Feb. 11 in Jacksonville, FL, working his way throughout the South and Midwest. Since last check, 21 shows have been tacked on Nelson’s schedule, beginning March 11 in St. Louis and running through an Aug. 3 performance in Vienna, VA. The full schedule is shown at right.
Last Thursday (1/28), Nelson postponed his concert in Kenansville, NC, due to pain in one of his hands, according to a statement posted at his website. A make-up date has not yet been announced.
Nelson dropped “American Classic,” his first solo effort for the Blue Note label, last August. The 12-track set, which peaked at No. 14 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, features his backing band–Mickey Raphael (harmonica), Joe Sample (piano), Christian McBride (bass) and Lewis Nash (drums)–as well as guest vocalists Diana Krall (“If I Had You”) and Norah Jones (“Baby It’s Cold Outside”).
Nelson was nominated for a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Album and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals alongside Norah Jones for “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”
“American Classic” marks the Nelson’s first collection of American standards since his 1978 release, “Stardust.” That record was ranked No. 257 on Rolling Stone’s 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
